Bacterial vaginosis results from a deficit in the total number of lactobacillus and a proportional increase in the number of anaerobic bacteria. Although antibiotics are effective against BV-associated bacteria and somewhat relieve symptoms, remission is usually temporary, and many patients relapse after treatment. Antibiotics and adjuvants reduce microbial diversity and cause the recovery of the lactobacillus population.
