What is Rheumatoid Factor - Quantitative?

Rheumatoid factor (RF) test determines the presence of rheumatoid antibodies in the body. These are the autoantibodies produced by body's own immune system that attack the healthy tissues. Presence of high level of RF antibodies might indicate the presence of serious autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosus, chronic infections like tuberculosis and leukemia.

Symptoms like joints pain, fatigue, weight loss, fever, weakness, lumps formation may be suggestive of RF antibodies and testing is usually advised in such cases. Some other tests are also recommended in conjunction with RF test to reach a definitive diagnosis.

If the patient has a positive Anti CCP antibody test but a negative RF test, it means that the patient is likely to develop Rheumatoid arthritis in the future. If Anti CCP antibody test is negative but RF test is positive, it can indicate that the patient should be analyzed for other inflammatory conditions as well.

There is no risk associated with the test. However, since this test involves a needle prick to withdraw the blood sample, in very rare cases, a patient may experience increased bleeding, hematoma formation (blood collection under the skin), bruising or infection at the site of needle prick.
