RBC Folate tests evaluate folate (vitamin B9) levels from the liquid part of the blood (serum/plasma) to assess any deficiencies. The body needs folate for normal growth and to make red blood cells (RBC), white blood cells (WBC), and platelets. The test is administered by taking a small sample of blood from a vein in your arm.
Symptoms of low folate include fatigue, low energy and shortness of breath, headaches, reduced sense of taste, and diarrhea. Treatment includes eating green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, dry beans, peas, and liver or folic acid supplements.
RBC Folate tests are used to detect folate deficiencies and the causes of anemia.
