Acenocoumarol is used for Blood clots. It prevents the formation of blood clots in the legs, lungs, brain or heart.

How Acenocoumarol works

Acenocoumarol is an oral anticoagulant. It acts by preventing the formation of harmful blood clots. Although it does not dissolve the existing blood clots, it inhibits them from growing larger and causing serious problems.

Avoid making sudden major changes to your diet during treatment with this medicine.
Acenocoumarol increases your risk of bleeding. Be careful while shaving, cutting fingernails or toenails, using sharp objects or engaging in contact sports (e.g. football, wrestling).
Notify your doctor if you see blood in your vomit, urine or stool (black, tarry stools or bright red blood).
Do not consume alcohol while taking Acenocoumarol as this may increase its side effects.

Q. Is Acenocoumarol same as warfarin?

Both Acenocoumarol and warfarin are blood thinners, but they have some differences. Warfarin has a more stable blood thinning effect.

It takes a little longer for Acenocoumarol to start working. On an average, it may take 3-4 days for Acenocoumarol to show its blood-thinning effect. For these 3-4 days, heparin may be used and then discontinued.

If you forget to take a dose of Acenocoumarol, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is time for your next dose then skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose and continue your normal schedule. Keep a diary or set a reminder, so that you do not forget it often.

Q. What monitoring is required while taking Acenocoumarol?

The bleeding times should be carefully monitored from 2nd or 3rd dose of Acenocoumarol and till the clotting status is stabilized. Thereafter, the bleeding time can be monitored monthly. This frequency may be more in elderly.
