Introduction
 
The thyroid, a butterfly-shaped gland in your neck just above your collarbone, is responsible for producing hormones that help the body work normally. There are several types of cancer of the thyroid gland.
 
Causes and Risk Factors
 
The person is at greater risk if:
1. Are between ages 25 and 65
2. Are a woman
3. Are Asian
4. Have a family member who has had thyroid disease
5. Have had radiation treatments to your head or neck
 
Investigations
 
Your doctor may examine you physically and check if you have a lump or swelling in your neck. You may be recommended to get the following tests done:
1. Thyroid laboratory tests
2. Blood tests
3. Imaging tests
4. Biopsy to diagnose thyroid cancer
 
Treatment
 
Treatment depends on the type of cancer you have and how far the cancer has spread. Many patients receive a combination of treatments. They may include:
1. Surgery
2. Radioactive iodine
3. Hormone treatment
4. Radiation therapy
5. Chemotherapy
6. Targeted therapy
