What do chicken pox look like when they first come out?

It is usually a day or two after these symptoms start to appear that you might notice the classic skin rash of chickenpox. This rash might appear as red or pink bumps on the skin which turn into blisters filled with fluid. These blisters break open which causes the fluid to leak and then becomes crusted. These blisters then scab over as they begin to heal. The rash might become extremely itchy, especially before it starts to scab over. You may experience new bumps on the skin throughout the course of the infection all over the body including the mouth, eyes, anus, and genitals. However, the severity and the number of new bumps might decrease over time as the condition starts to heal.

Does chickenpox provide lifelong immunity?

In most cases, getting chickenpox once means you will not get it again. This is called lifelong immunity. It is because the antibodies produced during the primary (first infection) remain in the body for a long time. However, rarely, a person can get reinfected.

Why is chicken pox worse for adults?

If an adult who never contracted chickenpox starts breaking out in the little itchy blisters, they're more likely to suffer side-effects such as pneumonia (an infection in the lungs), hepatitis (an infection in the liver), and encephalitis (an infection in the brain). Also, once infected, the virus remains inactive in nerve tissue and may reactivate later in life causing shingles.

How long is chickenpox contagious for?

A person with chickenpox is contagious beginning 1 to 2 days before rash onset until all the chickenpox lesions have crusted (scabbed). Vaccinated people who get chickenpox may develop lesions that do not crust. These people are considered contagious until no new lesions have appeared for 24 hours.

Does chickenpox happen twice?

One attack of chickenpox gives durable immunity to the patient and second attacks are rare. In people who have already had chickenpox and get it again, it is known as “reinfection”. Although reinfections by varicella can occur, these are usually asymptomatic and much milder (occurs, with fewer symptoms) than the primary infection.

Is chickenpox related to smallpox?

Chickenpox is the most important disease likely to be confused with smallpox. In smallpox, fever is present for 2 to 4 days before the rash begins, while with chickenpox, fever and rash develop at the same time. However, smallpox has been eradicated and no cases of naturally occurring smallpox have happened since 1977.

Chickenpox is a viral infection caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV, also known as chickenpox virus).
