Uric Acid, Random Urine

  1. Urine sample must preferably be the midstream urine (part of urine that comes after first and before the last stream). Collect the urine sample in a sealed and sterile container provided by our sample collection professional. Make sure that the container doesn't come in contact with your skin. Women are advised not to give the sample during the menstrual period unless prescribed.

What is Uric Acid, Random Urine?

This test measures the amount of uric acid in your blood. Uric acid is a normal waste product in your blood. This test is done to diagnose gout, to check the efficacy of medication that lowers uric acid, and symptoms like pain and swelling in the joints, joints that feel warm when touched, and shiny skin around joints. High level of uric acid can increase the risk of the development of chronic kidney disease. This leads to crystal formation in joints. Some people with high uric acid levels don't have gout or other kidney disorders and don’t need treatment. Diet, exercise, and other healthy lifestyle changes can improve high uric acid levels. However, medical treatment is also required.

  1. If you have joint pain especially in the toes or other symptoms suggesting gout 
  2. If you have recurrent kidney stones to assess the cause  
  3. If you have had or are going to have certain chemotherapy or radiation therapy for cancer

Interpretations

Higher than normal uric acid in the blood is called as hyperuricemia and can be caused by over production of uric acid in the body or inability of kidneys to remove excess uric acid 

  • Increased levels of uric acid can be seen in a disease called as gout or sometimes in kidney stones
  • Low levels of uric acid is much less common and is seen in liver or kidney disease, exposure to toxic compounds or Wilson’s disease

Q. My uric acid levels is high but I don’t have gout. What does this test result mean?

Not everyone who has high uric acid has gout. High levels of uric acid in blood do not always lead to symptoms. This condition is called asymptomatic hyperuricemia and can be seen in people with kidney stones, family history of gout etc.
