Mean Platelet Volume
Understanding Mean Platelet Volume
What is Mean Platelet Volume?
The Mean Platelet Volume (MPV) test is performed as a part of Complete Blood Count (CBC) test to measure the number of platelets present in a unit volume of blood. MPV helps to screen and diagnose bleeding disorders and various diseases (such as dengue) that affect the platelet count in blood. It is mostly advised along with the platelet count test.
It is mostly recommended when symptoms of unexplained excessive bleeding appear or the blood does not seem to clot. Your doctor may advise this test if you have nosebleeds, unexplained bruising and small red or purple spots on the skin. A high level of MPV may indicate thrombocytopenia (low platelet count), preeclampsia, and myeloproliferative disease (blood cancer). Low level of MPV may indicate anemia, chemotherapy, and inflammatory bowel disease.
