Understanding Anti Islet Cell Antibody
What is Anti Islet Cell Antibody?
When the beta cells of the pancreas slowly start getting damaged, islet cells autoantibodies begin appearing in the body. The anti islet cell antibody test is performed to detect the presence of autoantibodies to islet cells which is an indication of early stage of type 1 diabetes. This test is recommended for people who have already been diagnosed with diabetes, to determine its classification.
The test is done by taking blood from a vein in the arm. It detects the presence or absence of islet cell cytoplasmic autoantibody in the blood. Positive results indicate type 1 diabetes. Negative results indicate absence of type 1 diabetes. Healthcare practitioners may suggest a subsequent specific test for confirming type 2 diabetes.
