Understanding Adenosine Deaminase, Serum
What is Adenosine Deaminase, Serum?
Adenosine Deaminase (ADA) is a protein produced by the body that activates the white blood cells to protect the body from infection. The Adenosine Deaminase Serum is a test that is used to measure the ADA. It helps detect tuberculosis (TB), which causes an increase in the amount of ADA. This test also detects if tuberculosis may have spread to the lining of the lungs (pleura).
Symptoms of TB include chest pain, difficulty in breathing, and coughing. These symptoms are often seen in other conditions, too. Therefore, this test helps in a quick diagnosis and timely treatment. It is also prescribed if someone is at a higher risk of contracting TB, if they live close to an infected person, or if their immune system is weak.
