Definition of Indigestion
 
Indigestion is one of the common problems that has affected almost all of us at some point of time. Indigestion is defined as a feeling of discomfort or a burning feeling in the upper abdomen. 
 
Signs and Symptoms of Indigestion
 
Common symptoms are:
1. Heartburn or belch 
2. Bloating
3. Nausea
4. Vomiting
 
Causes and Risk Factors of Indigestion
 
Indigestion is usually caused due to:
1. Overeating
2. Eating too fast
3. Eating high-fat foods
4. Stress
5. Excessive smoking
6. Excessive drinking 
7. Excessive use of certain medicines 
8. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or an ulcer in the digestive tract
 
Prevention of Indigestion
 
Preventive measures:
1. Identify the triggers. Avoid them completely. They may include different foods.
2. Stay hydrated 
3. Do not overeat
4. Eat small frequent meals
 
Complications and When Should You See a Doctor 
 
Indigestion can be a sign of a more serious problem, you must consult your doctor if it lasts for more than 2 weeks or if you have severe pain or other symptoms. 
 
Investigations
 
1. Your doctor may examine your mouth physically
2. You may be recommended to get certain examinations done, which include: 
a) X-rays
b) Laboratory tests
c) Endoscopy of the upper digestive tract to diagnose the cause
