Understanding Bence Jones Protein Urine, Qualitative
What is Bence Jones Protein Urine, Qualitative?
The Bence Jones protein test measures the levels of the Bence Jones protein in urine. This protein is specifically produced by plasma cells that provide immunity to the body. In healthy individuals, the level of this protein is within a certain range. However, in people with multiple myeloma - a certain type of cancer of the plasma cells, the level of this protein is higher.
You may be advised to undergo this test if you have been experiencing anemia, decreased white blood cell count, lack of clotting of blood after an injury or cut or general bone and body weakness. You may be asked to hand over a urine sample to the diagnostic lab, and there are no other complications associated with the test.
